Wylyam,
Judging by the reactions of people in my local community and from what I've witnessed in the forums and on TV, perhaps you can tell us which teas are especially soothing and calming.

Chamomile Tea, Cat Nip Tea, Valerian, Hops,Lemon Balm and Rosemary are all good relaxing teas that help soothe and calm stress, anxiety and depression. Of these, Valerian is the strongest and also tastes and smells the worst. ....My preference is the Chamomille Tea........

Sounds like a decidedly unpleasant experience. I think Goldenseal Root Powder Capsules or Goldenseal Tea and Chamomile Tea will serve you best, all around. Hope you feel better soon..........

Hello,
It's nice to meet you. Could you tell me any information about general redness in the facial area. Any way to get rid of it would be appreciated

Hello Charista, I was starting to worry you might be experiencing a particularly bad flare-up from all the additional stress.....I think Valerian would be of good use to you at this time. The capsules would be eaier to swallow than the tea. It is nasty tasting and smelling. I think Valerian used in moderation does no harm, certainly it is less objectional than most of the mainstream prescritions for the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. When I have taken it in capsule form, I dosed it at 3 - 4 capsules at bed time....During the day, I would limit use to 1-2 capsules every 6 hours. As with any herb or medication for pain, insomnia, muscles spasms, etc..., care should be taken to not use it as a continuous regime. Dependence and desensitization to the herbs effectiveness could result in a small number of people.
Valeriana Officinalis
It has an unpleasant taste and smell. No serious side effects are known.
Common Name: ALLHEAL, COMMON VALERIAN, HELIOTROPE, VALERIAN
Family: valerianaceae
Action: hypnotic, nervine, sedative, stomachic, tranquilizer
Used to Treat: catarrh, epileptic fits, hypertoniticity, hysteria, insomnia, nervous stomach, neuralgia, pain-induced irritability, polyps (nose), skeletal muscle spasms, sleeplessness, spasms, tension

wylyam-
for the last few years, i've been having some digestive issues-around 3 years ago, out of the blue, i could no longer eat ice cream or milkshakes or similar without suffering terrible consequences later (enough pain to put one in a cold sweat is no good). later, shrimp and onions were added to the list, and now it looks like even garlic may be doing it. i have the basic symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome-not as bad as i did before moving out of a rather unpleasant life situation a few months ago, but i'm still not the way i ought to be. also, in the last week, i've been having rashes on my skin-not at random, just anywhere where my skin is pressing against something, like my legs when sitting, my forearms when leaning over a table, etc. sounds to me like a histamine reaction-these rashlike symptoms come and go, and, by my suspicion, are related either to a lack of some nutrient, or a surplus of some rather nasty stuff building up in my system. i do some niacin detox now and again, but i'd like to explore other options. oh, yeah, lately, for the first time in my life, i've felt itchy when introduced to the night air, which is horrid, since i love it. any suggestions? i appreciate anything you have to offer, ideawise.

Zer0sig, I'm glad to see you posting again. Any problems similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome are a pain in the ass Lets cover basics first....
Limit beef consumption to 3 times a week and no more than 5-6 oz. per time.
Avoid cow's milk and ice cream ....substitute fresh goats milk and goat cheese if at all possible. Fresh goats milk is the best thing for the stomache and lower intestinal tract I've seen. A permissable and reccommended cow's dairy product is an active culture yogurt. Though yogurt from goat's milk is even better. Acidopholus tablets are good also...
Avoid seeds and skins in veggies like tomatoes & peppers. Avoid sesamie seeds, poppy seeds, and other nuts. Peel stalks on broccoli, asparagus and peel radishes.
Avoid acidic products like coffee, tea and soda. Substitute herbal teas like Chamomile and Cat Nip Tea. Hot Chickory is an acceptable coffee substitute. Watch what time you eat dinner. Try and eat dinner before 6:30 PM. Eat small meals more frequently as opposed to a couple of heavy meals....
Avoid the killer stress that plagues you. Work on meditation and bio-feedback. 10 mins. 3 X a day will make considerable difference.
Here is the really controversial possibility. Two G.I. doctors I know swear that a small amount of Cigarette smoking significantly smoothes out the lower intestinal spasms...I hate to reccommend it, but some of the patients swear by it. I'm allergic to Tobacco, so I have no personal experience I can relate to it....
The rashes on your skin, is it primarily around your home ? Any possibility it is from a furniture polish or aerosol air freshener settling on furniture ? Do you have an unusually large amount of ragweed or golden rod blooming ? Have you tried switching laundry and body soap ? I would toss my body soap and switch to Dr. Brohnner's Peppermint Castille Soap ( liquid ). You can get it at health food stores or GNC. You will love it.....
None of these things will stop your symptoms completely ( unless we get lucky ), but together they should make your life far more comfortable. .....If you are still running solo, you might consider finding somebody you want to enjoy life with....Sometimes being loved by another is the best medicine available......

wylyam,
i'll have to keep all these ideas in mind-most of the conditions here (other than drink, though i drink a lot of water and try to keep out of too much soda) are already covered. the rash is not there until pressure is put on my skin, or until i see a big change in temperature/humidity (like going outside at night-sometimes, i get a feeling like my bones are itching). wish i could figure out the root of the situation. do you know any teas/tinctures/etc that are good for flushing unwanted cruft from the digestive tract? that probably couldn't hurt. i'm sure that as i work on stress management, that will likely have the most effect, as i've a habit of getting myself worked up over things that probably shouldn't be my responsibility. ah, well. as far as having to share my life with goes, i've recently gotten out of a relationship that lasted for most of the duration of 7 years, and while i'm happier than i was before the changes in my life (moving, breaking up, etc) occurred, i always want to find someone specific to share my time with. that will come in due time, i suspect.

It is the quality of the love, not the quantity. You grow wiser on your old age, zer0zig.....Try drinking Goldenseal Tea and Parsly tea. The Goldenseal tea will do you the most good. Parsly Tea is a great flush and high in vit.C.....Most vit. C is associated with acidic fruits and juices. Those are bad for your condition. The Parsly tea will flush your system and provide the C you need in a natural form. The Goldenseal tea will flush your system and help re-establish a balanced body chemistry, while at the same time promote healing......

Well Rose2U, the Herbal Healing and Alternative Medicine is a pretty laid back forum. There is little in the way of arguments, people are generally in search of help for their personal health, whether it be physical or emotional. Respondants generally show compassion and make a genuine effort to help others cope with these problems and so maximize their abilities to enjoy their lives and families......
In this enviroment, you can ask a Moose anything and not worry about how it will be viewed. A person best solves problems by recognising them first and asking a Moose helps that recognition process. People often feel that their personal problems might appear silly to a third party, regardless of how seriously they take it themselves. I find nothing silly in pain , worry, stress and discomfort. ...If I can not help a person find their own answer, I can at least hope that another member can or that the process of being able to just voice their concerns will help..........

well Moose Landers..this is my present situation.
I'm home 2 days now from work with a really really bad cold..or whatever it's called.
Feeling a bit better today..after a 6 day course of one thing leading to the next.
What tea would be the best ?
..also...What is the best way to not get re-exposed to these things ? I work with Kindergarteners and they are little germ magnets with parents that send them to school making everyone sick. It's a huge problem of course ..much beyond this topic.
My question is mainly.. What can I do to be up and running with these 5-6 year old immune systems that share everything ?!!

Echinacea Tea, Mullien Tea and Peppermint Tea are my favorites for colds. Echinacea tea will boost your immune system, Mullien Tea will loosen up the congestion and allow you to cough it up from your chest and loosen the congestion in your sinuses. Peppermint Tea tastes great, but it also helps open the sinuses. Zinc losenges work for many people I know in ridding colds early. Echinacea capsules taken " on 10 days " alternated " off 5 days " boosts the immune system without lessening the effectiveness of Echinacea. It's a good regular fall and winter regimine.....At night in the safety of your own home, the secret weapon against colds is " Dr. McGillicuddy's Menthyl-eucalyptus Schnapps " Your local liqour store can order it for you ( if they are nice people ) This potent schnapps opens the sinuses full bore wide open and clears any mucus off the throat and soothes it. A -1 ounce shot X each hour ( when staying at home ) will make you feel remarkably better and encourage the sleep you need to heal.... An alternative is a good Hot Toddy using 8 ozs. hot water, 1 oz. Rock & Rye Liqour with a 1/4 lemon wedge in it and 1 tablespoon honey.......Colds and sore throats are illnesses that respond well to small amounts of alcohol.......We order 6 bottles of Dr. McGillicuddy's Menthyl-eucalyptus Schnapps every year in October.....Warning this stuff is really at it's best as medicinal liqour. Thge taste is strong and if you can't abide menthol cough drops......As far as cough drops go, I prefer Ricola regulars. Many good herbs in them and they taste primarily of Horehound............

Drinking the Enchinacia tea now..got some from my daughter this afternoon. The other teas I have yet to try and will be looking for them now.
Never heard of McGillicuddy's Menthyl-eucalyptus Schnapps...thinking it will be a must to try too. If the liquor store here has a seasonal run on the stuff and they don't quite know why..I'll let them in on the news.
Very much appreciate the info and your time.
thanks again.

still not sure on the itching-i think the indigestion was set off by something recently. ah well. another question. any advice for one's singing voice? i have a gig on thursday, and while it's not especially pressing, since i've been practicing quite a bit, if you happen to know of anything held in high regard for helping sooth/protect vocal chords, i'd love to hear of it. tried some slippery elm extract once, and it seemed to wreck my voice. heh.

Have you tried Dr. Brohnner's Peppermint Castille Soap yet ( for the itching ) ?
For your throat, go to the Health Store and get " Horehound Tea " or dried Horehound to make your own tea. It tastes strong and needs a good bit of honey to ease the flavor, but works very well. Also try Wild Cherry Bark Tea..... In cough drops, Ricola regular ( not mint ) is very effective. Fisherman's Friend is an old standby cough drop that I remember being used by Country Western singers in Nashville, when I was growing up...I'm a " Music City brat ". grew up with my dad working for a large booking agency and my step mother did the makeup on Grand Ol' Oprey, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagner, Hee Haw and other shows. Most of the old timers kept Fisherman's Friend cough drops on hand....Damn they taste nasty....

I'm rather fond of lemon for throat discomfort. I also like plain ol' orange pekoe tea with lemon for sore throat.
Warm salt water gargle is quite healing too.
One home remedy I've used frequently is
one part chloroseptic (or other) mouthwash,
one part peroxide & one part water.
Swish & spit, as needed.

To the best of my knowledge, building a healthy immume system as a preventative is the best route.... After such an attack, the best herbals could do is attempt to treat symptoms of some diseases. Most biological attacks work so swiftly, they require extreme measures.....The case of Anthrax in Florida, today is an excellent example. With Anthrax , you can be dead 48 hours later. It takes major hospital support to see people through it. ... Build your immune system with healthy diet, Echinacea, vitamins and plenty of sleep. Pray for the best and bug out if you have too......I get so angry when I think of anybody targeting innocents. You and your daughters, like millions of others should never have to worry about things like this. I wish we had built a better society for all of you.

Wylyam,
This is my first time in this part of the forum. I was wondering if you knew of anything to help psoriasis. I have it real bad on my hands, feet and elbows. The doctors prescribed some lotion, that costs $75 and does nothing! Any ideas?
BTW, thank you for your post on colds. I have a terrible one and drinking a hot totty now. Thank you so much!!!! *sniff sniff*

the only thing that helped a good friend of mine was trying to follow some basic tenets set by his doctor: to get more sun, and cut down on alcohol and stress. he didn't do all that well with that. heh.
wylyam, my itching doesn't tend to occur when i'm indoors, just when i'm outside and hit the cool air, or occasionally (probably diet-related) i will welt up on any body part that has any pressure against anything. ah well. will keep you posted if i find any answers. a friend of mine has welts kind of like mine, but she gets them on the palms of her hands, too (i don't), and cold water settles, and warm exacerbates, whereas the opposite is true for me.

Almost any skin problem can be relieved and, usually cured by using a product called Total Solution. Unfortunately, it is only available through multi-level marketing nonsense. www.planetsolution.org.
IT IS AMAZING! I have been using it for 3 years. I first tried it on a skin cancer spot on my face. My doctor had been freezing holes on my face for a year and the worse one on my upper lip..he wanted to remove surgically. I used TS on it and it is long gone along with many other pre-cancerous spots that hadn't even been detected. Also, viral worts, age spots, redness on my checks and any itching from any cause. I brush my teeth with it (it's great for gums and whitens teeth) do my laundry (no more detergent rashes) and put some in my dog's water to keep him parasite free. Check it out! AND, it's not expensive.

quote zerosig,
a friend of mine has welts kind of like mine, but she gets them on the palms of her hands, too (i don't),
That sounds like either dishyrdosis or a severe allergy. I would think that if it was severe allergy then she would have been going to anaphalaxis by now. glad to hear she isnt! with dishydrosis (which is almost like psoriasis) it is water building up at the subcutaneous layer of the skin, instead of the outer layer like it is supposed to. It also has to do with the skin dying and needing to slough off about every 4 days instead of the usual 3-4 weeks. This is what I am batteling. They have me using some lotion called LacHydrin (there is a generic also) the name brand runs around $75 and the generic (which I just found!!) is around $25. It takes upto 4-6 weeks to work effectively. During this time she should use some strong hyrdrocortisone on her hands. And she should use both 2-3 times a day. Once it stops with the pustules, then should go to only the LacHydrin and a weaker dose of hydrocortisone on her hands 2 times daily. I hope this helps her.
For you, you might want to try bathing in Aveno daily. I have found it helps my daughter immensly!! She has very dry itchy skin, especially this time of year. It is caused by allergies, and Zyrtec or Claritin help alot as well. When it gets bad she has to use a hydrocortisone and Eucerin mixture of lotion daily until it goes away. Then just Aveno baths and regular Eucerin lotion. (The Aveno Bath and Shower oil, then you can take showers with it is much better.) Do not take hot showers or baths. Always luke warm. Hot takes the moisture out of your skin. And baths do the same.
I hope some of this helps. We deal with horrible skin alot in my family. I am also in medical school at the moment, we just finished the dermatology section...yucky!! It is pretty bad stuff!

melon,
i'm pretty sure that my friend does not have eczema (dishydrosis is a subset of eczema from what i'm reading), the welts come and go, rather than being liquid-filled blisters (i had this regularly when younger, and may still get something similar on my ears). as far as the skin treatments, thank you for the advice.

Are you sure this Dr.McGillicuddy's Menthyl-eucalyptus Schnapps works? More to the point what are my chances of getting hold of some in the UK or is it one of these remedies that's only available in Moose country?

Thank you Kathie. I am having alot of problems with stress/worry.
I also have another problem I hope someone can help me with. I have severe high blood pressure. This morning it is 155/110. (Normal is 120/80) I am getting close to the zone where they worry about stroke or heart attack. I am taking a diuretic, but it is not helping. Does anyone know of something that will help high blood pressure?
Thanks!

Does anyone know of something that will help high blood pressure?

meditation, and lots of it. you don't have to be *good* at it, you just need to take a little time to yourself to sit back, relax, and revel in it. being happier couldn't hurt either. you have made it rather clear that you are not always happy with the person you are. i don't see why-i haven't seen anything but evidence that you're a good person who could use a little relaxation. if you know someplace nearby, outdoors, where you feel reasonably safe, just try walking around there a few times a week. don't worry about how much exercise you're getting-just enjoy it. nothing puts me right more than walking off into the woods. would i be right if i were to guess that you have a lot of emotions that you feel unable to or afraid to express? perhaps writing down how you feel, now matter how you feel, wouldn't be a bad idea. if i were worked up enough about a specific event or issue and did not feel that communicating it would be helpful, i would probably write a page of the most terrible, vicious, atrocious things i could think of. then i'd burn it. because i'm better than those negative thoughts. we all are. sometimes, some of us just have to be a little more vigilant about it. my way is primarily in my music. i write sad and often angry music, but it helps me keep from focusing that energy toward someone specific, be it myself or another. when i'm angry enough, sometimes i like to just go out and chop some wood. i'm not as strong or as adept as i'd like to be, but after time, i forget whatever it was that i was so angsty about and move on. catharsis is important to one's health-as someone whose blood pressure is very closely tied to stress level, i've had to come up with my own ways to make peace with myself. i can't say that i've figured it all out, but it sure is nice to know that i don't have to hold the bad things i see against myself. take it easy, and you will feel better. there's no better blood pressure medication than contentment.

when did you say we would all start burning? when should i make a pledge? should i listen to the voices in my head?

Hi Wylyam,
Sputter has occasional flair-ups of gout. The medication the docs give him leeches the potassium out of his system and as a result he suffers from agonizing muscle spasms. To top it all off, he is allergic to most foods with high levels of potassium, with the exception of potatoes. Any suggestions?

Whoa, I have NEVER heard of anyone allergic to raisins and bananas!
Or is it what they use to preserve the raisins that he is allergic to? Do they use anything on bananas?
My gout flares up with tomato products and cheese. So I can only eat pizza once a week, if I avoid tomatos/cheese all the rest of the time.

I've never been to the U.K., Skeptic. I know that most of the liqour stores in the U.S. will oredr it for customers , provided that the management are the accommadating sort. Check with whatever establishments in the U.K. sell hard liqours and see if they can get it for you..........
Hi Wylyam!
Alas no luck finding Dr.McGillicuddy's Menthyl-eucalyptus Schnapps! I'll have to give Flint's a go!
Still I did discover that alot of serious sporty types drink lots of gratefruit juice as it's supposed to help ward off infections.

Sonnet, for the muscle spasms , try Valerian Tea or a Valerian Sub-lingual liquid if you can find it. If he is allergic to most potassium containing foods, take the supplements....
Is he allergic to Salmon, sardines and other fish ? They are great sources of potassium. So is spinach. Though many people react to Broccoli, peas, lima beans, bananas and citrus fruits, most can eat spinach . Look to makink foods with potassium rich ingredients. Potatoe bread as an example, or spinach quiche. .....

I have a question:
Is Armour thyroid considered an alternative medicine? It is all natural and contains the elements necessary to replace one's diseased or absent thyroid.
I have more info if anyone is interested in getting off Synthroid or the like in favor or something natural - and better!

Wylyam:
I found most of the info I have at About.com
search thyroid, then armour.
Went in and found the site - http:thyroid.about.com/library/news/blthyroidnews.htm?terms=thyroid
Am not a computer sophisticate as you can tell.
Can give you this from personal experience: Hashimoto's disease led to the removal of my thyroid and I was prescribed Armour thyroid. Ten years or so later, Synthroid hit the market and most doctors wouldn't prescribe much else. I was changed to Synthroid and felt lousy. Using the list of doctors (endocrynologists) found on the About.com site, I found one fairly close, made an appointment and was prescribed the Armour, which is more closely associated with what a normal gland puts out. The puffiness is gone (20# worth) and I feel much better. There is an aspect to Armour that deals with emotional well-being which is not present in the chemically contrived Synthroid. It's a complicated subject and in spite of all I've read, all I really know is how I feel.
Hope this is helpful.
